If you are one of the many people who has begun to use the huge GRANDMA (Genealogical Registry And Database of Mennonite Ancestry) database for your genealogical research, especially the GRANDMAonline site you will be very interested to learn that they are offering a new feature called GRANDMA's Window. The purpose is to share your photos with others, and tie those photos to the assigned GRANDMA #number so that others who are researching that individual can see who it was.
Window has filters in place so that it does not display photos of anyone who is living unless they are over 92 years of age.
This new photo-sharing feature is offered in conjunction with a membership at the Flickr.com site. In fact, to take part in this you will need to take out a membership at Grandmaonline.org (cost is $20), AND at Flickr.com (which is free). Flickr already is set up for storing, filing and sharing photos and has a good reputation for this service. There is no need to duplicate their work. Rather, a partnership has been formed.
Prepare your photos in digital format. Any size and resolution is accepted.
Name each photo file in such a way as to incorporate the GRANDMA assigned number for the related person as a tag describing the photo. Now upload the photos at your Flickr account.
When you next go to login at your Grandmaonline account, the system will search Flickr and if it finds a photo for the person you are searching for, it will appear as a thumbnail photo in the database.
Anyone interested in more details on the photo, they can click on it, and they will be taken to see it in full-size on the Flickr site.
When you are uploading the photo(s) at Flickr, you will find they offer several ways to do it, and you are able to give each photo a title, a description, and tags. It is in the tags that you want to enter the GRANDMA assigned number, preceded by the letters GRIDM. You must also set the Privacy setting to Public so that the GRANDMA database is allowed to access it.
Note: Some have noticed that Flickr is not always prompt at delivering the thumbnail photo in grandmaonline. It can take from one minute to 22 minutes. So do not panic if you don't see it immediately in real-time.
