Der Bote, which began as Der Mennonitische Immigrantenbote in 1924 was published in Rosthern, SK. It served the immigrants coming to Canada from Russia after the formation of the Soviet Union, giving them a medium of contact, informing them about their new country, and providing them with spiritual and cultural nourishment in their mother tongue, the German language.

In 1947 Der Bote and the Christlicher Bundesbote were merged and became the weekly paper for the General Conference Mennonite Church.

Obituaries and death notices became an important segment in each issue of Der Bote. During the 84 years of Der Bote, over 14,000 obituaries and death notices were published. Publication of Der Bote ceased with the final issue dated March 26, 2008.

A word of explanation about this document:

If you see a number in the “Birth Year” column in BOLD type, this indicates that only the age of the deceased was given. The number printed in the BOLD format is a calculated Birth Year number and could be off by one year, depending on the actual birth date.
